Maybe, pretending to read newspapers wasn't the best strategy to secretly observe someone, at least not the most creative. I had waited for this guy for almost two hours in this bedraggled restaurant in one of the poorest parts of Manaus. The man I was observing wore a black attire, black hat and black sunglasses. He could have been a special agent in this outfit, but I knew he wasn't. He looked kind of nervous when he came in and looked around, sweat dripping from his forehead. I took another sip from my already warm beer and simply kept watching the guy, who was getting more and more nervous. Then I saw what I was looking for. A metallic suitcase. I raised my hand and waved. The man recognized and slowly stepped towards the small table I was sitting at. "Why so nervous?" I asked smiling and took another sip from my warm beer. He put his hat and his sunglasses down. His head was red like a tomato and full of hot sweat. He looked at me like the question was ironic. "Well, welcome in Brasilia. You will get used to the sticky heat later or earlier...or you just wear something short" I giggled. The man put the suitcase on the table, looked around to make sure no one was watching us and opened it. "200.000 dollars...you can count if you want. You will get the other half when the job is done" the man whispered. I picked out one of the 100 dollar notes and held it against the light coming from a bright neon lamp above. I didn't believe the man would betray me, but just I had to be sure. I put the note back into the suitcase, closed it again and put it under the old wooden table. Then, the man pulled out a small slip of paper out of his suit coat and put it down in front of me. "That's what we want you to find" He said and looked at me. I was surprised at first. It looked like a statue of a snake. I knew that natives worship these scary creatures like God, but there had to be hundreds of snake statues. What was so important about this one? The man smiled to my confused face and continued. "This isn't a normal statue, it just pretend to be. From the outside it just looks like an ordinary snake statue, but the whole inside is a gigantic diamond" I looked at the little drawing again. "And how am I supposed to find it if it looks like an ordinary snake statue?" I answered, still disbelieving. This could be one of the biggest diamonds on earth. The man stood up and headed towards the exit. Before leaving he turned back around and replied: "I thought you were a pro on this...show us" then he disappeared as fast as he appeared and left me back with 200.000 dollars, a confused face and a little piece of paper.

The next day's I had spent in libraries and cybercafés to find out more about this valuable statue. The internet didn't help, so I read books from early in the morning to late in the evening. During these 3 days I lived in a little hotel, just a few minutes away from the library. After days of working, reading and speaking to people who might know something about that, I finally found something. And with something I mean the probable location of the statue. An old, lost temple in the jungle, at least 2 walking hours away from the nearest street. It was a temple where the natives prayed to a kind of naga like god. I found some old illustrations of this god. It looked like a giant snake with a scaled, human looking chest and arms. The head looked like one from a cobra. The god's name was Razog. I shuddered at the sight, even though it was nothing more than an old drawing. Although I wasn't really religious, I had great respect for other cultures and religions, even the ones who worship dragon and snake gods. I've never believed in such things, but I found it was interesting and also kind of scary at the same time. Fear, interest and adrenaline, that's what brought me into this job. Not an ordinary job, but though you earn good money and you will never get bored. I've already been in a few old temples, have dived into old shipwrecks and had climbed down a gigantic cave and I've never disappointed one of my clients. But I've never had a mission like this one. How much could this diamond snake cost? Maybe 10 Billion dollars or even more? It was late in the night when I was sitting in my hotel room. Tomorrow, the adventure would begin. The suitcase with the 200.000 dollars lay on my bad. I pulled out a thick wad of the money and simply looked at it. I've never seen so much money at once and this was only the first half. It couldn't be a fake, I would have recognized that. Either my client was very generous or...my pulse fastened from this thought...the mission was very, very risky and dangerous. I but the wad back, closed the suitcase again and put everything into my hotel safe. Then I picked up my phone. I wouldn't do this job all on my own, so I needed some guys to help me. And that wasn't an easy task…

One day later I was surrounded by strange plants, soaked in sweat and with an uncountable number of mosquito bites and cuts in my face, followed by a group of four Brazilian soldiers. I leaded the way and the group was following me, nervously looking around. The men I hired were all four native Brazilians and all seemed to be a little bit superstitious and it needed some time to convince the, to come with me. The others I've asked were even worse. They all told me that I was sending them to hell by taking them to the temple. This group also wasn't too good for that job, but they were the only ones to come with me and I didn't really want to start out all on my own. Now I was struggling myself through the hot, moist jungle with a bushwhacker in my right hand and a compass in my left. "Sir, how long will it take until we arrive?" a voice called from behind. I sighed. They behaved more like little Childs than like soldiers. "I don't know...but it's the right way" I called back, but the man kept on asking. "We've been walking for three hours now and there's no sign of a temple far and wide" I tried to stay calm. Even though I knew that the usual walking time to the temple would be only two hours I didn't want to give up and the "useful" comments from my companion didn't help either. "I'm sure we're almost..." Before I could even end my sentence, I stumbled over a stone and fell down. Suddenly I was glared by daylight. Usually it was pretty dark in the jungle. That could only mean one thing...We arrived. I carefully opened my eyes, finding myself on a glade in the middle of the jungle and right in front of me a large, moss covered and old stone building. The temple. I couldn't suppress a smile at this lovely sight. One of the men wanted to help me up but I pushed his hand away, stood up again and walked into the temple area with wide eyes.

The entrance wasn't that easy to find. It was covered with plants and we had to cut away all that stuff. It took at least one hour until we could enter. Luckily, me and the others had flashlights with them. Everyone also had an AK47, "for your own safety" they had told me. As if we were heading right into a lion's cage. In the meanwhile, the men's mood had cheered up and two of the, were already talking about what to do with their part of the profit. I was okay with that. Now we only had to find this little sculpture. The temple complex was much bigger than I had expected. I had to set waypoints with a little piece of chalk every few steps. After all I was responsible for the success of this mission and I didn't really want to get lost in such a gigantic temple and die from hunger or thirst. That would also cause the death of four other men and I really didn't want to take too high risks. All of a sudden, my flashlight went off. "Oh come on..." I said and hit the little flashlight a few times with my hand as I suddenly heard a hiss right in front of me. My breathing stopped and I stood still. The men behind me also didn't move. One whispered: "What was that sound?" I put on the flashlight again. I screamed and jumped backwards as I saw a snake at the ground in front of me. The beast was hissing and looked like it wanted to attack us. I calmed down fast. It was just a rather small python, not even a toxic snake. I sighed and stood up again. "Hey little friend, may you show us the way to a statue that looks like you?" I said smiling. The brave, little snake just hissed again and didn't move a single inch. The men were afraid as hell. The one standing right behind me aimed with his AK47 at the snake. If he shot, he would have probably hit me instead of the snake. His eyes were wide opened and his hands were shaking and he breathed heavily. Same with the other man. "What's up guys, it's just a little snake, nothing more" I said with a confused face. They were still acting like they had seen a ghost or so. "No..." One of them said. "...this is the spawn of the devil and it's the sign that Razog is still here...Avé Maria, cheia de graça, o Senhor é convosco..."

"Would you please stop that" I interrupted him but the scared man just kept on praying in Portuguese. "...Bendita sois vós entre as mulheres, bendito é o fruto do vosso..." I could only shake my head in disbelief and didn't recognize the snake still didn't move a centimeter. The beast hissed again. The man screamed and one of them suddenly started off running. The other followed after a few seconds, leaving me alone in the lost temple with a snake and an almost broken flashlight. "Come back you stupid idiots" I shouted, but the four men were almost gone. I turned around. The snake was gone.
I was all on my own again, but I decided to continue searching. I wouldn't need these stupid, overreacting guys anyway. Hours passed and I always did the same all over again and again. Going into another room, find out that it was empty and mark it with my piece of chalk. With the time I was getting tired. But my human egoism didn't allow me to rest in such a situation. At that moment I really hated myself for being so selfish and greedy. But why giving up after I've come so far. I totally lost my sense of time and I couldn't tell if it was dark or still bright outside. After another hour I didn't even feel my legs anymore. I didn't know if I was walking or standing still, then I hit my head at the hard ground. What was happening to me? Have I been cursed because I came here? Would I die in this surreal place? My head hurt and I couldn't stand up anymore. With my shaking hands, I tried to grab the flashlight a few inches away from me. Then it went off and I drowned in black darkness.

I felt something moving around me. It felt like scales. I was like paralyzed and even though I was still awake, I couldn't move. The scales twined around me and lifted me from the ground. I couldn't see anything, couldn't and was half unconscious, so I didn't really recognize what happened. I felt the scales and I could read that it might be a giant snake, but I didn't really care at this moment. It felt like I was turned on with acid. The scales didn't tighten or try to crush me, not like what snakes would usually do with their prey. Then I felt something like hands holding me. Wait, hands? Did one of the men come back to save me? "Juan, is that you?" I mumbled. The guy who picked me up didn't answer. Then he seemed to carry me away. It was a strange feeling because whoever this was didn't even seem to walk. He was just sliding over the floor. After what felt like hours to me, I could see something again. A very faint, orange light. I was lying on the guy's shoulder like a sac and still couldn't really move. I looked up a little bit and what I saw made me stop breathing for a moment. That guy was really sliding over the ground. He had a huge snake-like tail. That was all I could see at this moment. He suddenly stopped moving as we came into a big hall with a fire in the middle. I was carefully put down on a flat stone plate. I heard a deep voice speaking. "Wake up human", and all of a sudden I could move my arms and legs again. I slowly tried to get up and rubbed my eyes. My eyes widened when I sat up and saw what had brought me here. I screamed and backed away in panic as I suddenly lost my balance and fell backwards. Something stopped me from falling further down. I slowly opened my eyes again. The tail of the snake like guy had coiled around me and was holding me. I looked down. Right next to me was a big hole and I almost fell into it. I couldn't even see the ground, just black darkness. I looked back at my scary savior. I knew exactly who stood in front of me. "Razog" I whispered. The giant cobra head came closer and eyed me suspiciously. "Who are you...not many humans still know my name and even less have the courage to speak it out loud", Razog replied. His head was now just a few centimeters away from my face and I could see a pair of long snake teeth as the god spoke to me. My whole body was shaking and I was stuttering when I tried to answer: "I...I'm just an..a..adventurer...I..I swear I didn't mean to disturb you" The eyes of the cobra head narrowed to slit. He would immediately recognize when I tried to lie. We both knew it, but what would be better? Lying and probably enrage the naga god, or telling the truth, what could make him even more angry? I was on the horns of a dilemma, so I decided to do the only right thing. "I..." I stopped for a moment and took a deep breath. "Yes human?" The naga said with a deep, but calm voice. "I came here because I was commissioned to steal a valuable statue...Since there's no convincing evidence, many humans don’t believe in gods anymore. I thought I wouldn't hurt anybody with taking your sculpture...I thought you didn't exist...I'm sorry" I looked down in shame and waited for my punishment. Seconds passed and nothing happened. He seemed to think. "Hmmm, well...I believe I have to punish you for this" Razog said in a weirdly calm voice. Tears were running down my face, but I nodded. I sobbed and waited for the naga to do something. I saw the cobra head coming closer and the god opened his yaws. I closed my eyes and waited for one of the giant teeth to drill through my body, but all I felt was the warm and wet inner surface of the naga's maw. I knew what would happen. Snakes don't chew their food, they swallow it whole. That was what would happen to me. I felt Razog lifting his head to swallow me and the light faded when I slid towards the gaping throat entrance. It only took him a few swallows to force me into the gullet. The walls were moving around me and pushed me further down. I didn't even try to fight back. It would be useless anyway. Who would ever try to fight against a god. So I was holding still and made it easy to swallow me. The soft walls pressing against my chest made it difficult to breathe. I was surprised that I could breathe anyway. But after all what had happened, this wasn't even something I wondered about. The space suddenly became wider and I was pushed into a tight, moist sac. I knew where I was now and I knew what would happen now. I lay my head down on the squishy, warm flesh that was gently moving around me. Of course I was afraid, but I somehow managed to accept my fate. It was my fault. I wanted money and adventure and I had to pay for my silliness. There was only one thing to do..."Razog?" I asked.

"Speak human"

"I know you're going to kill me, but please forgive me. I did many things wrong in my life. We humans are just money-mad creatures without feeling any sympathy for the people we might hurt. I never wanted to be that kind of human, but I am. Please forgive me..."
It went silent for a couple of seconds and even the stomach walls seemed to stop moving. Then I heard the naga's voice again. "Well, I guess your fear was enough punishment...I've felt you're not a bad human. But sometimes it needs a little push to make humans see their faults. I'm not mad at you...I just wanted to test you...and I'm never wrong with my assumptions" I was confused and surprised at the same time, but he was right. I have finally recognized all my faults and I would never do a job like this anymore. I swear that to myself. "Now sleep human...tomorrow you will see life with other eyes" As on command I suddenly felt very tired and my eyes slowly closed as the soft movements around me lulled me into a deep slumber.

I woke up. The sun was shining down at me and I put my hand in front of my face. I was lying in front of the temple, surrounded by four ashamed looking men. Juan took my arm and helped me to stand up. "Are you alright sir...we found you here this morning?!" I leaned against a tree and looked down at my body. Neither slime nor any scratches or other injuries covered my body. Had it been a dream? "Sir, we have to go now" One of the other men said nervously. I nodded and wanted to take my backpack, but it was strangely heavy. I opened it and pulled out a small snake statue that exactly looked like the one from the picture. The men were speechless, but I knew what I had to do. I turned around and ran towards the nearby river and threw the statue as far as I could. It landed in the murky water and immediately sunk down in the rapids. Juan screamed and stared at me like I was insane. I just smiled at the men, turned around and went back to the city to give back the 200.000 dollars. I wouldn't get rich now of course, but I found out that there are much more important things in live. Now, my new life has begun.
I always try to write varied stories. I've done some with dragons, aliens, snakes and...uhm...other strange creatures.. :D
This time it's a naga story (Always wanted to do one)
and if you've already read some of my stories, you might have found out that there's a moral in almost every story...I'm curious who will guess the moral of this one ;)

Anyway...have fun reading and please give me feedback..
